Dealing with the global challenges of salinisation. Drivers, challenges and solutions

Article header image

To underpin the Global Campaign on Salinisation with knowledge and information, research by Wageningen University & Research (WUR) was conducted to develop a report and an infographic. The report addresses global challenges of increasing salinity levels in water and soil. It delves into past knowledge for understanding the salinity better. Case studies from diverse regions around the world from different hydroclimatic regions are included, highlighting the multifaceted impacts of salinity, and proposing region-specific solutions. Furthermore, the report emphasizes on the need for a comprehensive and balanced approach that integrates prevention and adaptation strategies, considering the complexity of salinity challenges increased by climate change. The Food Systems Approach and Integrated Water Resources Management are examples for frameworks for managing water resources and ensuring sustainable food systems. To safeguard food security, livelihoods, and ecosystems, robust water management, policy interventions, and measures to mitigate climate change are crucial.
