In Baringo County's arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL), two dairy cooperativesSabatia Farmers Cooperative Society Limited (Sabatia FCS) and Mumberes Cooperativeare leading the charge in revolutionizing the local dairy industry. These cooperatives have long been central to the livelihoods of dairy farmers in the region, providing crucial support from production to marketing. However, a key factor contributing to their recent success is an innovative approach to logistics and quality control, in which local youths play a pivotal role.

Once children are in the classroom, school meals ensure they are well nourished and ready to learn.  The importance of school feeding is well established and widely recognized. Providing nutritious food at school is good for educational achievement, for nutrition and health, for inclusion of girls and of the most vulnerable children and, if done right, for local economies.

Consistent access to high-quality feed, including forage, is crucial for the competitiveness of the dairy sector in East Africa. Quality forage, when used in a balanced ration for dairy cattle with different milk production levels, can reduce the feed cost for the farmer, increase the margin above feed cost, and reduce enteric methane emission intensity per Liter of milk.

Smart, curious, and confident. These describe well seven students of Kafrelsheikh University, Egypt, who concluded end September their exchange program in the Netherlands through the MOBILISE Mobility program. The three months program with three modules - Production, Post-harvest, and Marketing, was highly appreciated. They learned and practised new things related to horticulture during their stay. They also noted that the horticulture course at Kafrelsheikh is a solid base and fundamental for further learning.

The Food Loss Cinema was an engaging and interactive set of videos that were showcased at the NFP World Food Day in Amersfoort. The cinema was organsied by FORQLAB, which stands for the Food Waste Reduction and Food Quality Living Lab. This is a consortium by four Dutch universities, Van Hall Larenstein, HAS Green Academy, Inholland, and Aeres and Egerton University and Meru University from Kenya. Moreover, a range of cooperatives, trader companies, business support organizations, and county authorities in the dairy and avocado sectors were involved.

Benjamin Tashobya, a 66-year-old farmer from Rukungiri, has made significant improvements on his farm after attending Integrated Smallholder Dairy Programme (ISDAP) training on advanced forages. Specifically, he learned about Sugar Graze, a high-energy sorghum, and Pearl millet, which is highly valued as animal feed due to its high protein content and ability to thrive in arid conditions. These millets provide essential nutrients for livestock, especially in areas with low rainfall.

The first presentation is by Proscovia Alando, founder and CEO of Samaky Hub, an aquaculture consultancy targeting small scale fish farmers in Kenya. She is also co-founder and head of business development at Ressect, a start-up in Nakuru that specialises in farming black soldier fly as an alternative protein source for animal (fish) feed.

The second presentation is by Dr Sigrid Wertheim-Heck, associate professor in global food system sustainability at the Environmental Policy Group of Wageningen University, and professor Food and Healthy Living at the Aeres University of Applied Sciences. She will be talking about why transforming food systems is quite a radical concept and the challenges it brings. What does it mean for you? Where could you see desired transformation taking place and what brings about such change?
