From Knowledge to Yield: Scaling the LC-Focused Dairy Extension Model through Dairy Farmer Schools
BRIDGE+ is the second phase of the BRIDGE project, which began in 2018 and has achieved significant success in improving the productivity, quality, and marketability of dairy products in Ethiopia. The new phase will build upon these successes and expand its scope and impact. The Dairy Farm School Initiative, part of the BRIDGE+ project, aims to scale up LC-focused dairy extension model, which promotes peer-to-peer learning among farmers. This collaborative environment not only fosters knowledge sharing but also improves market linkages and access to essential inputs.
After 6 month of integration LCA with DFS, the extension model is active in 133 woredas across six regions: Amhara, Oromia, Tigray, Sidama, Southern Ethiopia, and Central Ethiopia. To facilitate LC-focused dairy extension model 1,087 Dairy Farmer Schools (DFS) have been established an average of 17 member Per DFS. About 534 service providers selected and trained to lead these DFS using adult learning principles that encourage active participation and stimulate the learning among the farmers (Table 1).
As a result of these efforts, significant improvements have been reported: 41.84% of participating farmers noted applying good dairy practices, while 46.33% increased milk yields (Table 2).
Looking ahead, we expect more farmers to participate, and the government integrates these practices into regular extension activity in the dairy village. This engagement will enhance the sector's extension system.
