Joan leading a Rumen8 training in Uganda

Joan Atukunda's childhood was spent amidst the picturesque landscapes of Kazo, where her family farm became her playground. It was here that she discovered her passion for cows and the rhythms of farm life, a connection that would shape her career in profound ways.

Now 32 years old, Joan is a seasoned professional in the field of animal production science, boasting seven years of invaluable experience in the dairy sector. Her expertise lies in not only training and mentoring farmers, but also in introducing them to cutting-edge farming technologies. From pasture-based grazing systems to zero-grazing methods and semi-intensive techniques, Joan has been at the forefront of revolutionizing dairy farming practices.

Central to her approach is a deep understanding of animal feeding and dairy nutrition. Joan's focus centres on optimizing forage and feed utilization, guided by advanced technologies like the Rumen8 software. This innovative tool empowers farmers to create balanced rations, ensuring the health and productivity of their herds.

A graduate of animal production and management from Busitema University, Joan is currently pursuing a master's degree in agriculture and rural innovations, with her research focused on dairy nutrition.

In 2019, Joan received specialized training in the utilization of Rumen8 software, thanks to the support of SNV/TIDE. The following year, she took on the role of a local capacity builder, training 18 extension officers in the software's application. Together, they implemented the program on 32 farms during a pilot initiative spearheaded by SNV/TIDE.

Today, Joan continues to be a driving force in the implementation of Rumen8 software, now overseeing its integration on 82 farms through a sustainable model where farmers pay for the services rendered.

Responding to the growing demand for customized farm advisory services, Joan, along with a like-minded friend, established JIMA Agricultural Consultancy Uganda LTD. This registered consultancy not only leverages the power of Rumen8 software but also offers Joan the opportunity to serve as a dairy nutrition consultant and grants manager.

Joan Atukunda's journey is a testament to the transformative impact that dedicated individuals can have on an industry. Her unwavering commitment to advancing dairy farming practices is not only changing the lives of farmers but also shaping the future of agriculture in Uganda.
