From October 31 to November 2, 2024, the 9th African Livestock Exhibition & Congress (ALEC) took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The event welcomed participants from 14 countries, over 100 exhibitors, and nearly 4,000 visitors, reflecting its consistent growth year after year.

Three years ago (before 2021), there was a rising concern by the consumer society in Ethiopia on the quality and safety of milk supplied from one of the major dairy potential areas called Selale, which is found near to Addis Ababa.

With the NL-CGIAR Senior Expert Programme II (SEPII), senior researchers affiliated with Dutch research institutions will have the opportunity to contribute to research by CGIAR, the world's largest research partnership for a food secure future. BRIDGE+ is the second phase of the BRIDGE project, which began in 2018 and has achieved significant success in improving the productivity, quality, and marketability of dairy products in Ethiopia. The new phase will build upon these successes and expand its scope and impact. The Dairy Farm School Initiative, part of the BRIDGE+ project, aims to scale up LC-focused dairy extension model, which promotes peer-to-peer learning among farmers. This collaborative environment not only fosters knowledge sharing but also improves market linkages and access to essential inputs.

These cooperatives have long been central to the livelihoods of dairy farmers in the region, providing crucial support from production to marketing. However, a key factor contributing to their recent success is an innovative approach to logistics and quality control, in which local youths play a pivotal role.

Our World Food Day exhibit used a Swahili proverb meaning "One who has eyes is not told where to look". This perfectly captured our message: while the informal food economy is right in front of us, vital, visible, and integral to the everyday lives of millions it is too often overlooked, misunderstood, or under-appreciated. After all, the informal economy is THE economy.

Smart, curious, and confident. These describe well seven students of Kafrelsheikh University, Egypt, who concluded end September their exchange program in the Netherlands through the MOBILISE Mobility program. The three months program with three modules - Production, Post-harvest, and Marketing, was highly appreciated. They learned and practised new things related to horticulture during their stay. They also noted that the horticulture course at Kafrelsheikh is a solid base and fundamental for further learning.
