Promoting the declaration of 2028 as the Year of Saline Agriculture at COP28’s Food Systems Pavilion

On the 10th of December, 18:0019:00 (UTC+4) the COP28s Food Systems Pavilion will host a session promoting the declaration of 2028 as the Year of Saline Agriculture, showcasing the transformative power of saline agriculture towards developing more climate-resilient, sustainable farming systems and healthy ecosystems in salt-affected areas.

The objective of the session is to raise awareness on the importance and benefits of saline agriculture; and to provide evidence to support investment and policy development for saline agriculture in the context of climate change. The session consists of a panel discussion and a movie.

The Dutch Water Envoy Meike van Ginneken will moderate the panel discussion. Panelists contributing to the session are: Mrs. Christianne van der Wal, Minister for Nature and Nitrogen Policy at Ministerie van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit, Mr. Gilberto Silva, Minister of Agriculture and Environment from Cabo Verde, Mrs. Tarifa Ajeif AlZaabi, Ed.D, Director General at International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), Mr. Aly Abousabaa, Director General ICARDA; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, and Mr. Lifeng Li, Director of Land and Water Division at FAO.

After the panel discussion, a new video will be launched, featuring the global perspective of saline agriculture implementation in different regions, sharing inspiring stories from farmers dealing with salinity in their lands.

Under the leadership of Wageningen University & Research, this session was designed in collaboration with International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), FAO, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), Ministerie van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit, NWP (Netherlands Water Partnership) and Netherlands Food Partnership
