Are you active in sustainable agriculture, horticulture or the water sector? And do you want to do business or invest in Kenya? Then join this mission, led by the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Aid, Reinette Klever. Ingrid Thijssen, chairman of VNO-NCW, is business mission leader.

The Kenyan market

Kenya is one of the most important emerging markets in East Africa. Its economy has been growing at an average annual rate of 5% in recent years.

Kenya is a logistics hub in East Africa. The Kenyan government encourages further development and strengthening of infrastructure to reinforce this position.
The Netherlands is Kenya's 3rd largest trading partner, mainly through exports of Kenyan agricultural and horticultural products to the Netherlands and the rest of the EU. Kenya has a fairly open economy. The EU concluded a trade agreement with Kenya in 2023, partly to boost trade opportunities. Our country is the 5th largest investment partner for Kenya.

Opportunities in Kenya for Dutch companies

Kenyan companies and the local government are seeking sustainable solutions to societal challenges. For example, the country wants to:

  • improve food security;
  • make agriculture and horticulture more sustainable and resilient to climate change;
  • improve soil health;
  • manage water more effectively and use it more sustainably.

The Kenyan government encourages companies to address these challenges. In part through public-private partnerships. This provides business opportunities for Dutch companies. They benefit from the Netherlands' good reputation in Kenya. The Dutch embassy is happy to support companies in this.

During this trade mission, you will learn more about these opportunities and developments in the sustainable agriculture, horticulture and water sector.

For whom?

This mission is for Dutch companies, financial organisations and knowledge institutions active in sustainable agriculture or horticulture, or in the water sector. Consider, for example, the following topics.

Sustainable agriculture and horticulture:

  • innovations in agricultural technology
  • solutions for sustainable production and biodiversity
  • irrigation systems and efficient water use
  • first-class starting materials
  • climate-smart cultivation techniques
  • (cooled) agrologistics
  • sustainable chains in agro-industry
  • financing

Water:

  • innovations in wastewater treatment
  • management, storage and re-use of water
  • distribution of drinking water
  • sanitation solutions and smart, nature-based solutions
  • climate-smart irrigation and other applications in agriculture
  • innovative financing

In particular, we invite women entrepreneurs active in these sectors to participate.

Program

This mission starts on Monday 17 March 2025 in the capital Nairobi, with a joint kick-off. We will also visit the towns of Naivasha and Nakuru in Nakuru County. Finally, the mission ends again in Nairobi, on Thursday 20 March 2025.

At this mission, we offer a tailor-made programme. In outline, that programme consists of:

  • informative seminars;
  • company and/or site visits;
  • trade receptions and networking events;
  • 1-to-1 matchmaking;
  • local support from the organisation;
  • local transport (linked to the mission programme).

The draft programmes of both sectors can be found here.
