Finding proven approaches to reduce global Food Loss and Waste (FLW) can be quite a struggle. And how do you initiate effective measures as an organisation? The FLW Toolbox provides all the information on how your organisation can effectively reduce FLW. The TARGET - MEASURE - ACT approach not only reduces FLW, but also decreases greenhouse gas emissions, the water footprint, land use and nutrient loss.

Every year, over 30 percent of globally produced food goes to Waste between the farm and the consumer. This is not only a threat to feeding the world’s population. It also has significant environmental, economic and social consequences. Therefore, the FLW Toolbox is intended for private chain actors, policymakers, NGOs and other professional organisations that want to invest in reducing Food Loss and Waste.

The Toolbox benefits organisations by providing:

  • Invaluable insights into global Food Loss and Waste scenarios
  • Detailed information on Food Losses and their trade-offs in supply chains
  • Proven strategies and tools to help you reduce Food Loss and Waste effectively

The Target - Measure - Act structure of the Toolbox helps you to systematically:

  1. Discover effective strategies for setting targets to reduce Food Loss and Waste by identifying hotspot food products and chain stages impacting Food Loss and Waste;
  2. Determine what exactly to quantify in the context of Food Loss and which approach best suits your specific case; and
  3. Design effective Food Loss and Waste reduction strategies by leveraging experiences and valuable insights from research in this field and by accessing information and supportive tools for decision-making.

The FLW Toolbox was initiated with funding from Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature in the Netherlands and carried out by Wageningen University and Research, in collaboration with partners such as the Netherlands Food Partnership (NFP), Samen Tegen Voedselverspilling (STV), Sustainability Initiative Fruit and Vegetables (SIFVA, part of IDH), and Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences. Each of these partners played a vital role in shaping and executing the project’s objectives. Together, they contributed significantly to the outcomes, leveraging their respective expertise and resources to advance knowledge within the field.
