Webinar Recording: Finding the Balance Between Data Protection and Innovation in AgTech
In todays fast-evolving digital landscape, the intersection of agriculture and technology (AgTech) has opened a wealth of opportunities for improving farmer services, boosting productivity, and optimizing supply chains. However, this rapid growth also brings crucial challenges, particularly when it comes to the collection, use, and protection of data.
On 5 September 2024, the Digital Agri Food Collective (DAC) hosted a panel discussion, “Balancing Data Protection and AgTech Innovation: Exploring Ethical Data Sharing in the Agri-Food Sector,” delving into the complexities of data governance in the context of African agriculture. The webinar featured a lineup of experts who discussed the critical issues surrounding the ethical use of farmer data, compliance with emerging regulations, and the need for informed consent, all while ensuring that technological advancements in AgTech can continue to benefit farmers.

My name's Ignitious Chilembo, Agricultural Research Officer at Zambia Agricultural Research Institute. This serves to appreciate the effort to put in to share the recorded webinar on Finding the Balance Between Data Protection and Innovation in AgTech. Those has allowed those of us who missed the live session to catch up. I specially noted the critical importance of robust data governance in the agri-food sector. By establishing clear authorities, accountabilities, and processes, organizations can mitigate business risks while promoting innovation. The emphasis on valid consent, addressing challenges, and adopting good practices (e.g., written/recorded consent) is particularly noteworthy. By prioritizing ethical data sharing and proactive governance, the agri-food sector can ensure sustainable growth, maintain consumer trust, and safeguard farmers' rights. Appreciated.
